Top 14 Perform

Well, this was a fairly mediocre week in So You Think You Can Dance history, and then I lost my blog post.  So be prepared for a downer of an update this week.

More of Anna Kendrick's boobs after the break…

…Just kidding.  No more boobs.  I told you this would be a downer of an update.

Group Routine

Song: "Dimman Kryper Sakta In" by District 78

It's a very cool, punk-rock style routine.  I like it a lot.  We always guess that it's Sonya as the choreographer, and this week it's her and Dmitry, which explains why there was some neat partner work mixed in.  Thumbs up.

Cat Deeley Outfit Review

I'm really liking the color combo of the light peach dress and the dark makeup. A little more edgy than she've doing the last week or two, very nicely done.

Guest Judge

And the guest judge is Anna Kendrick!  She knows absolutely nothing about dance, but she's as big of a geek about this show as I am, and she's an awesome actress, so I still really like her as a judge.  Also, she's got a lot of cleavage going.  You're welcome Jacob, we all know you love her.

Cat Deeley mentions that Anna Kendrick is a Tony winner.  What?!  This obviously required some serious journalistic investigation, so I took it upon myself to Google it.  Turns out when she was twelve, she had a supporting role in the musical High Society as the younger sister Dinah. Sharp trivia minds might also know that High Society is a musical based on The Philadelphia Story.  Sharp Diana-trivia minds will note that I love that movie.  So that's cool.

Elimination

We learn that Curtis is injured and won't be dancing this week.  Given that he was the de facto guy going home this week, that doesn't bode well, and it makes two weeks in a row where the guy on the outs can't dance.  The guys are having trouble hanging in there.

Bottom Boys: Alan, Curtis, Nico

The boys don't solo.  I do want to see Nico really dance his own style at some point, but I'm not too disappointed.

Bottom Girls: Jasmine, Alexis, Mackenzie

I'm surprised that Jasmine is in the bottom, given that she and Aaron are such a power couple.  This is how voting for guys and girls separately changes things.  Used to be if you were in the right partnership (or the wrong one) you could coast or end up in the bottom a lot.  And just goes to show that the Quick Step is still cursed.

They save Mackenzie again, and give her some high praise.  The other two girls solo.  I love Alexis's solo!  She taps on pointe!!!  But she can't hang with the other girls in some of the different styles.  Jasmine has a pretty good "I am woman" kind of solo.

Jenna and Tucker - Hip Hop

Choreography: Luther Brown
Song: Slight Work by Wale fet. Big Sean

I felt like Jenna hit this routine really hard.  Tucker danced a little up with his posture, but I thought they both did a really good job.  It lagged and ended a little weird, but I liked it a lot.  Nigel was really mean, but Mary Murphy said the same thing I did.  Because Mary Murphy and I are on the same judging wave length.  We are like judge sisters.

Alexis and Nico - Contemporary

Choreography: Sonya Tayeh
Song: Ashes by The Bengsons

I mean, this was a really good dance and all.  But it was so depressing.  I guess it captured what it was going for, and I really admire it technically, but it just made me feel sad.  The judges love it, but it's not my favorite.

Hayley and Curtis Leonardo - Argentine Tango

Choreography: Leonardo and Miriam
Song: Este Es El Rey by Juan D'Arienzo

Curtis would have struggled with this routine, but Leonardo is "da bomb," as my father is fond of saying.  He is so suavemente, he steals the show.  But Hayley holds her own and looks great doing it.  Anna Kendrick says she thinks she could solve world hunger if she had Hayley's body.  Anna Kendrick, you eloquently express so many things that are locked up inside my brain.  Thank you.

Mackenzie and Paul - Jazz

Choreography: Sonya Tayeh
Song: You'll Find a Way by Santigold

The routine is good, but I feel like I've seen this style ("sex based on strength and aggression") from Sonya too many times for it to be as noteworthy as it might be if it felt original.  Gives Mackenzie a chance to show some range, however, so I'm happy for her.  Paul looks good with his shirt off.

Jasmine and Aaron - Contemporary

Choreography: Justin Giles
Song: The District Sleeps Alone Tonight by Birdy

Well, a dance about The Giving Tree is certainly not something we've seen on the show before!  I thought the choreography was really interesting and intricate.  Definitely the most memorable visual of the night.  Nigel explains the plot of The Giving Tree to all of us, because we have been living under a rock for the last fifty years.

Amy and Fikshun - Hip Hop

Choreography: Christopher Scott
Song: Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye

What a cute number!  It was just perfect choreography for their personalities, and Christopher Scott always does a good job.  Just really sweet.  A few slip ups (literally), but I also think this is the first number where Fikshun outshone Amy, so it's nice to see that balance in their partnership.  Nigel compares them to Katee and Joshua.  Who is my all-time favorite couple.  But these two are definitely giving them a run for their money!

Malece and Alan - Salsa

Choreography: Jonathan Platero
Song: Pa' Los Romberos by Tito Puente

I was trying to figure out why the choreographer looked familiar, despite not choreographing before - he was a very short-lived contestant! (Side Note: this was one of our first introductions to Stacey Tookey)

The salsa was pretty crazy difficult.  Alan looked so good - so smooth.  Malece looked like she was just barely keeping up.  She hit all those tricks, but she didn't really have the whole shimmy and style down. Nigel still seems totally committed to his love for Malece, he has the nerve to suggest that she did better than Alan?  In what universe, Nigel?  Meanwhile, Anna Kendrick encourages them to make a baby.  A good idea, Anna.

Group #1 - Broadway

Choreography: Spencer Liff
Song: Come Together by Joe Cocker, from Across the Universe

I really enjoy this routine - it's West Side Story meets the Beatles meets modern day.  Very cool.  Anna Kendrick says "it's boring how good you guys are."  Everyone else can't get over how hot Spencer is.  OK, it's true.  He's so hot right now.

Side Note: WHY are they putting those horribly ugly fake bangs on Mackenzie?!!!  They did it once for the fembot routine, which kind of worked.  But seriously, are they worried that she is too pretty, so they are trying to make her ugly?  WHY????

Group #2 - Contemporary

Choreography: Bonnie Story
Song: Tears from an Angel by Ryandan

At first I thought she said she making a song about bowling, not bullying.  I was more excited about the bowling.  I don't understand why these new choreographers feel the need to share a message with the world.  If you are going to do that, you have to do a really really good job.  I mean, like, Mia Michaels Addiction good.  Otherwise it's just super annoying.  We learn that Bonnie Story choreographed High School Musical - I guess she wanted to prove that she's a real choreographer.  By addressing a high school topic.

Also, I'd like to point out that I remembered that time her daughter auditioned for the show.

The staging of the dance is very cool, with the oversized shadows dancing behind them.  But I find the dance pretty uninspiring, and I think they fawn over it because it's about bullying, and if you don't like the dance, it's because you are pro-bullying. Obviously.

Elimination

Alexis and Curtis are the ones to go.  Sad to see two tappers getting out, especially because Alexis is my favorite tap soloist to have ever been on the show, but they couldn't hang with the other styles.

Parting Shots
I had predictions for the next week, but they were lost when my blog was.  So let's just assume I got it completely right.
