So many great dances this week, it's hard to choose a favorite! I mean, when Cat Deeley's outfit is my least favorite part of the show, you know the dancing has got to be good.
Up next, after the break...
Group Routine
A cute, fun Bollywood number. Realized pretty quickly that a guy was missing, so spent far too much time trying to figure out which guy wasn't there.
Cat Deeley Outfit Review
Not such a fan of the baby doll and bows look. I like a more grown-up style. She's definitely been embracing a 60s and 70s inspired wardrobe this season, so that's fun to see, but this is a little too much like a sexed up first communion dress for my taste.
Guest Judge
Kenny Ortega is noteworthy for his movie connections, but he's kind of a so-so judge. I like a judge to bring either personality or dance insight or, ideally, both. Thank you, Mary Murphy. I feel that Kenny Ortega doesn't really bring either. He's not funny, and he doesn't have a lot to say about the technique. But he's not horrible.
The Danger Zone
I'm realizing as they are lining up that the "bottom six" really means half the remaining contestants.
Girls: Jenna, Malece, Amy
Boys: Alan, Nico, Tucker
I knew someone surprising would be in the bottom, but AMY? Did not expect that! She's pretty much been perfect all the way through. I'm guessing she fell victim to the "so great she must be safe" sense of security and lost votes.
They save Nico and Jenna. I do really like Jenna, so I'm glad to see them save her, but I really can't imagine they would send Amy home unless she sit down on the stage and doesn't dance. So I'm assuming Malece to go. She was my vote to go out anyways, so happy enough about that.
Tucker does his solo. It starts out really graceful and beautiful. We get to see what Tucker is all about. But he slows down and just kind of stops and reaches at the end. Since he's injured, I'm wondering if he ran into trouble and had to improvise? It was so good, and then it felt so off. Alan is endearing because he dances very masculine and strong, but his face is so awkward and dorky.
It turns out that Malece has a better solo than Amy, at least in terms of style and consistent presence throughout. Although technique-wise, Amy is ridiculous. Those turns just didn't stop! And Malece fumbles her flip at the end. So I don't think it's enough to save her.
Hayley and Nico - Broadway
Choreography: Sean Cheesman
Song: Kiss of the Spiderwoman from Kiss of the Spiderwoman
Wow, there were some hard tricks in there. This was really good. Nigel calls it one of the best broadway routines the show has ever had, and I agree. The choreography was strong, intense, and it told a story. It was just an all-around great number.
Malece and Alan - Jazz
Choreography: Mandy Moore
Song: Come Dance with Me by Michael Buble
I'm not sure why they are calling this jazz - it's closer to Broadway, or they could just make "Gene Kelly" it's own genre. The musical nerd in me is annoyed that Alan has never seen Gene Kelly dance (seriously, how can you be a professional dancer and have never seen the Singin' in the Rain number?) and super annoyed that Malece references Audrey Hepburn as a noteworthy musical dancer. She was a trained ballerina and all, but she didn't really dance in many movies except Funny Face. Come on here. Nigel name drops Cyd Charisse every chance he gets, you should know that if you watch this show, even if you've never seen the movies.
I thought the dance was cute and fun. Alan really has the build for Gene Kelly, and he gets the style down. Kenny Ortega makes a good point that the chemistry isn't totally there. Nigel gets mean, because he's planning to send them home. He always does that. Malece knows this is the end, so she's already crying, and Alan looks resigned to his fate. Mary Murphy is the only judge to actually critique the dancing, which is why she's my favorite judge.
Jenna and Tucker Alex Wong - Paso Doble
Choreography: Jean-Marc Genereux
Song: He's a Pirate (Ship Ahoy Tribal Remix) by Klaus Badelt & Chris Joss
Alex Wong is back! Love love love seeing him, and glad they gave him something out of his own style so he could get a chance to do more of what he wasn't able to one the show.
I don't really like the Paso Doble, but this is really great. I like the pirate theme, and they danced it really well. I really love Jenna, I voted for her this week, because she shouldn't keep being in the bottom.
Mackenzie and Paul - Contemporary
Choreography: Mandy Moore
Song: Edge of Glory (Slow) by Lady Gaga
This is really beautiful. Just a gorgeous contemporary dance, and beautiful dancing. This will definitely get votes. Just when I think the romantic contemporary dance is overdone, I realize that I still love it. So I'm a sucker. Whatcha gonna do?
Kenny says they are two of his favorite dancers. He told Jenna that she was one of his favorite dancers five minutes ago. Kenny Ortega, I'm on to you! Kenny super awkwardly compares Paul to Paul from A Chorus Line. Kenny, the memorable thing about A Chorus Line Paul is not his dancing at all. It's his monologue that makes you CRY. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRYyiiRCp4g Take care of my son. I am already crying and I haven't even watched the youtube clip yet.

Amy and Fikshun - Viennese Waltz
Choreography: Jean-Marc Genereux
Song: A Thousand Years, Part II by Christina Perri ft. Steve Kazee
The dance is pretty beautiful. Except Fikshun really can't do the closed hold, or the more technical parts of the waltz. The end lift is beautiful. Amy is amazing, Fikshun does OK. Kenny tells Amy that she's going to be here for a while. Kenny, you realize Amy is one of the bottom two girls, so you're basically confirming that Malece is out. That's awkward.
Jasmine and Aaron - Hip Hop
Choreography: NappyTabs
Song: Gold Rush by Clinton Sparks
This was great! Such fun characters and such great dancing. Just awesome. Also, how did Cyrus ever break up with Jasmine? She's so hot. I mean, she's basically playing a madam (excuse me, "gold digger") here.
All the dances were awesome this week! It was just one after another of greatness.
Top 6 Guys - Hip Hop
Choreography: NappyTabs
Song: It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World by Joshua Ledet
A hip hop dance about guys not able to commit. In the intro, all the guys are all trying to talk seriously about men being afraid of commitment, but they are all babies. I don't think they totally get it. I liked the dance pretty well. The rope was cool. It was a little difficult for their styles to all blend together, but it was a neat routine.
Top 6 Girls - Contemporary
Choreography: Stacey Tookey
Song: Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Ray from The Great Gatsby
Wow, I really liked this. It was a beautiful piece, and perfectly danced. Loved loved loved it. And it is clear that the girls are just at such a higher calibre than the boys, as an average. Also, the untrained girls are going, and the untrained guys are staying longer, so every girl left is just super clean and technical.
Elimination
At this point, it's clear that Malece is going home. Between the guys, I'm torn. The judges choose Alan. OK, then. These two had the worst routine this week anyways.
Parting Shots
I think at this point, they only announce a bottom four, and the dancer goes off based on votes. But we'll have to wait and see.
Bottom Four Predictions: Tucker, Nico, Jenna, Hayley - with Jenna and Tucker going home.
I decided to rank the top five in order of my favorites, but I kept rearranging my girls list based on which youtube video I was watching. So there's only a boy's list. Here you go:
1) Aaron
2) Paul
3) Fikshun
4) Nico
5) Tucker
